Japanese Momoyama period rare early pair of Baku figures, carved in keyaki wood with an exquisite wood grain, 17th century, circa 1650. (Set of two)
The elephant-like Baku is an imaginary and composite creature from Chinese mythology, thought to prevent or devour nightmares. It has the trunk and tusks of an elephant, the eyes of a rhinoceros, and the paws of a tiger. Baku figures are commonly housed within shrines, mounted at the ceiling in opposite corners.
In remarkable antique condition with some losses.
