From the 1959 limited edition ‘Rialto’ series for Blenko Glass Co., this very rare decanter by designer Wayne Husted is rendered in opalescent while glass with a red eye shaped prunt affixed to the disc shaped stopper. According to Husted, this unique decanter, produced for the limited 1959 series 'Rialto' for Blenko Glass Co. of West Virginia, United States, was inspired by the iconic American film 'Casablanca'. Recounting his time as a movie theater usher, over a decade prior to creating the design, and his great admiration for this Hollywood classic, the stopper's red eye is a nod to the famous line "Here's looking at you kid".
This piece was recently referenced by Wayne Husted on his blog, and the story he shares is interesting, as it gives us insight into his design process, and his wit. Thank you Wayne!
