Michael Ayervais

Michael Ayervais is a recognized collector and connoisseur of Japanese Ningyō. Across the years Michael has expanded his collecting into other Japanese and Asian arts. Today Michael’s collection of Ningyō is the most prominent collection of this Japanese art form in the West. In 2001 The Ayervais Collection was exhibited in The Sackler Japanese Galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a result of the success of that exhibition, The Ayervais Collection has been given “permanent rotation status” at the museum. Currently on exhibition at Mengei Museum, San Diego CA.

In 1995 the entire Ayervais Collection was exhibited at the Japan Society in New York City. Supporting the collection and exhibition a catalogue, “The art of Human Figurine: The Ayervais Collection” was published. To date, this publication is considered the most important text on Ningyō. The Ayervais Ningyō collection has also been featured in several books and art journals, such as the prestigious “Arts of Asia,” and “Daruma.”

Michael Ayervais is also a lecturer on Ningyō and has appeared on behalf of the subject at museums and universities throughout the world. Presently Michael is retained by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Japan Society of America, Sotheby, Christie’s as well as private and foundation collections – The Stern Foundation and The Rockefeller Foundation -- as a consultant.
